Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never trained martial arts and I’m not very fit. What can I expect as a beginner?

If you feel self conscious before coming to a class, you will soon find out that everyone in the class, no matter how experienced, is preoccupied with their training. People are too busy working on their style to worry about what people around them are doing.

Our coaches will assess your skill and fitness level and set your training accordingly. You will never be forced to push yourself too far, we endeavour to guide you to improve your fitness and health. Everyone is different and everyone has to start somewhere, so we suggest just getting in and try it.

The Jin Wu Koon style is extremely broad, we really focus on developing motor skills. We like to start from the floor up with stance, balance, distance, timing and movement along with basic striking skills, low kicks and push kicks and defence techniques. To start out you don't need any level of fitness or flexibility – we'll work on that with you over time. At a beginner there is minimal contact. The foundation skills are generally practiced with a partner on focus pads or kicking pads.

What do I wear?

Beginners just need to wear is something comfortable which allows you to move and stretch without restriction. As you progress to the first sash a uniform of black martial arts pants and a Jin Wu Koon logo top are required. Please refer to our Code of Conduct page for a detailed list of uniform requirements.

It is recommend to bring a towel and water to each training session, especially in summer.

Do I wear shoes?

No shoes are worn on the mats which are cleaned after each session.

What gear do I need to start with?

Nothing to start with, but students will be required to get their own protective equipment as they progress. Ask instructors for advice.

Do I have to spar or will I get hit?

Beginners work with focus pads and kick pads, there is minimal contact. There are application drills which allow important characteristics to be developed like movement, distancing, timing and practicing technique etc. Graded students work with light reaction type sparring to improving their technique (mouthguard and protective equipment is required).

Please refer to our Code of Conduct for more on this

First session free?

We do offer a free trial class, we want to make sure you are keen and enjoy the way the classes are conducted. We cannot teach martial arts to you if you are not willing to make a commitment. Sifu Mick Spinks says a little training for a long time will get the results, not a lot of training for a little time.

What ages do you teach?

The Kung Fu classes at Engadine are predominantly adult. We do have a few younger students from my previous Kung Fu classes and would consider teaching over 14 year old students if they are prepared to make a mature commitment.
